Today I Learned: How to stop anyone on Google+ from emailing me, whether or not they have my GMail address

The instructions are here (via BoingBoing)

I think this is the tipping point for me, it’s time I stopped depending on Google services. If this new feature had been offered on an opt-in basis, I could have lived with it. I’ve opted out, but I’m taking this as another reminder that if I rely on Google, I have no control on how the services that I depend on are run.

I know Google services are free, but that isn’t why I chose them. I opted to sign up for these services because they were the best available for me at the time. I would happily have paid for Mail, Calendar and the discontinued Reader, but that has never been an option.

I’ll be keeping my account (it’s time to stop depending on Google, not stop using it altogether), but this week I’m going to try to set up the mail service provided by my webhost to take over from GMail. Not the most straightforward of tasks, given that GMail holds all my contacts and collects mail from a variety of accounts, but let’s see how it goes.
