Is the world’s oldest protractor sitting in a museum in Turin?
Physicist Amelia Sparavigna thinks she has solved the mystery of a wooden box that was found over 100 years ago in the tomb of an architect from ancient Egypt, but is her theory correct?
You may be reading this and thinking ‘What new look?’,but if you are accessing the site using a handheld device such as an iPod Touch or an Android phone, you should be seeing something very different.
I’ve added a new plugin that displays a different version of the site to mobile devices. If you have any feedback or if you encounter any problems, please let me know.
If you don’t like the mobile theme,it’s easy to go back to the standard version of the site, just scroll down to the bottom of the page and turn the mobile theme off.
Our original site was for materials to help you with your maths course, links to useful websites, reminders about homework, maths challenges, puzzles and more.
Several people have asked if the site is going to continue, so here it is. What would you like to do with it?
If you would like to be an author and post material to the site, let me know and I’ll set up a login for you.
I hope you find this site useful and that you enjoy using it. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
Why? Well,I put together this revision list as promised, then I got an email from Holly saying she couldn’t find it. I thought that was strange, but when I investigated I discovered that I had made a mistake and that I’d published this list in the wrong place. I’d like to offer very big apologies for that.
***************
The end of year exam will be in the first week back after the holiday. We will have a revision lesson on Wednesday, then do test paper one (non-calculator) on Thursday and test paper two (calculator) on Friday. These are some of the key topics to revise, with some links, most of the links are to BBC Bitesize or some PowerPoint files to help.
You shouldn’t need to spend ages on every topic – most of this should be case of simply refreshing your memory or practising a couple of questions, then move on to something else. Use your time wisely – everyone has identified weaker topics that they need to work on,so concentrate on those.
If you are having problems, please get in touch,or come and see me one lunchtime once we’re back at school. Good luck!
You might like to try the MoreThanMaths.com Easter Egg Hunt – there are lots of eggs to be won!
‘Hidden’on the main MoreThanMaths.com website are a dozen pictures of Easter eggs like this one. When you find an egg picture, click on it to reveal a puzzle or a problem to solve.
Can you find all the eggs? How many can you solve?
Get an entry form from your teacher,or download one by clicking here. Make sure you hand your entry form in by 3:30 on Monday 11th April
You don’t have to solve every puzzle to win a prize. There are prizes for the best entries from each year group, plus lots of prizes for runners up.
Sorry –but only Y7 and Y8 students at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School can enter the competition.
You all have an individual login – check your school email account to find out what it is. You will need to use your own login –otherwise someone else will get your points!
There’s a chance to take part in F18 at lunchtime,so come along and join the fun.
You can also logon from home (or download the World Maths Day app) –but remember that this free event only lasts one day…
This YouTube video seems to show a working version of M.C. Escher’s famous impossible waterfall painting. If you look carefully, you can see a copy of the painting in the bottom right hand corner of the video.
What do you think?
(PS – apologies for the adverts on the video – they are put there by YouTube – I can’t control that!)

Comments from students, parents, teachers or visitors to this site are welcome, but please use some common sense and follow these guidelines:
1. Be safe - students shouldn't include personal details in their comments - that includes your full names. 2. Be sensible - comment in the appropriate place, for example if you have a comment about a particular puzzle, leave it on the page for that puzzle. 3. Be clear - please try to use good English (not txt or lolspeak). Comments in other languages are fine, but they will only be published if I can translate them. 4. Be respectful - it's fine to be critical or to disagree with what someone says, but if you do,please discuss it pleasantly!
Comments won't be published immediately - every comment is read by me before it appears on this site. If something isn't appropriate I won't publish it.
