A Mathematical Egyptian Tomb Mystery?

128 Angle ProtractorsIs the world’s oldest protractor sitting in a museum in Turin?

Physicist Amelia Sparavigna thinks she has solved the mystery of a wooden box that was found over 100 years ago in the tomb of an architect from ancient Egypt, but is her theory correct?

New Scientist has a nice article with a photo of the box and some diagrams showing how it could have worked. Why not head over there and take a look for yourself?

Welcome!

Ms Lindemann

Welcome to your new website.

Our original site was for materials to help you with your maths course, links to useful websites, reminders about homework, maths challenges, puzzles and more.

Several people have asked if the site is going to continue, so here it is. What would you like to do with it?

If you would like to be an author and post material to the site, let me know and I’ll set up a login for you.

I hope you find this site useful and that you enjoy using it. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Work for 8A1 – Lesson One –Wednesday 29th June

Learn to draw and use scatter graphs and to understand correlation

1. You need to watch the video ‘Scatter Graphs’. You will find it in Curriculum Data –>Mathematics –>Videos maths4real

2. Make some notes to explain these key points. You might find it helpful to use Conquer Maths or BBC Bitesize to help with this task.

  • What is a scatter graph?
  • In maths, what do we mean by a line of best fit?
  • What is correlation?
  • Draw some sketch diagrams to show the type of scatter diagram you would expect to see if there was:
    • positive correlation
    • negative correlation
    • no correlation.

3. Try to answer the exam-style questions on the sheets.

End of Year exam –revision

First of all –sorry!

Why? Well,I put together this revision list as promised, then I got an email from Holly saying she couldn’t find it. I thought that was strange, but when I investigated I discovered that I had made a mistake and that I’d published this list in the wrong place. I’d like to offer very big apologies for that.

***************

The end of year exam will be in the first week back after the holiday. We will have a revision lesson on Wednesday, then do test paper one (non-calculator) on Thursday and test paper two (calculator) on Friday. These are some of the key topics to revise, with some links, most of the links are to BBC Bitesize or some PowerPoint files to help.

You shouldn’t need to spend ages on every topic – most of this should be case of simply refreshing your memory or practising a couple of questions, then move on to something else. Use your time wisely – everyone has identified weaker topics that they need to work on,so concentrate on those.

If you are having problems, please get in touch,or come and see me one lunchtime once we’re back at school. Good luck!

The Learning Zone is now online!

learnIt’s taken a while, but I’ve finally added some content to the Learning Zone on www.MoreThanMaths.com.

Most things have now been transferred from the old website;I expect to finish that process within the next few days.

Please let me know what you think.

Can you find things? Do the headings/categories make sense? Does everything work?

I’d very grateful for any feedback – either positive or negative.

My next priority for the site will be creating materials and finding links for the GCSE module revision pages for the new exams.

Sadly that means some other tasks will remain on hold. I’m hoping to add some extra activities for the other sections later on this year.

Congratulations!

Party PopperI’ve just finished marking your end of term tests –and I’m delighted at how well you have all done.

Everyone in our class has made progress –which is obviously good news. :)

I can’t publish the levels here – but they are fantastic results that reflect your hard work. Well done to all of you!

If you would like to know your test result, just send me an email (from your school account –so I know who it’s from!) and I’ll get back to you.

Can you believe your eyes?

This YouTube video seems to show a working version of M.C. Escher’s famous impossible waterfall painting. If you look carefully, you can see a copy of the painting in the bottom right hand corner of the video.

What do you think?

(PS – apologies for the adverts on the video – they are put there by YouTube – I can’t control that!)
